At a Glance

The purpose of the Dreamworker course is to deepen your appreciation for the role played by dreams in personal growth and transformation. It provides you with the skills you need to understand your dreams better and, more significantly, prepares you to help others understand their own dreams. It examines the important role waking life plays in the dream world and the role of personal responsibility and ethics in working with the dreams of others. Course requirements include a practicum. 

This course will not provide the student with the background to offer psychotherapy or other therapeutic counseling, which requires special training and state licensure.

Atlantic University has instituted a noncredit option for lifelong learners. Almost all of the courses at the university can be taken at the noncredit level (some restrictions apply). The Lifelong Learning program is a great option for those who do not wish to pursue a graduate degree or a formal certificate, but still want to participate in all that Atlantic University has to offer. And, the online format is great for those who cannot travel to Virginia Beach for on-campus programs. 

There are no prerequisite requirements for participation in Lifelong Learning courses and students will study with the same mentors as in the degree and certificate programs. Courses taken at the noncredit level do not have academic credit and are not transferable to the master’s degree program.

Upon the successful completion of each course, the student will be issued an official university Certificate of Completion. 

This course can transfer to the Spiritual Guidance Mentor Certificate program.  

Course Delivery

Courses at Atlantic University are delivered in an asynchronous online environment. Asynchronous learning happens on your schedule. While your course of study, instructor, or the program will provide materials for reading, lectures for viewing, assignments for completing, and exams for evaluation, you can access and satisfy these requirements on your own schedule, so long as you meet the expected deadlines. Common methods of asynchronous online learning include self-guided lesson modules, pre-recorded video content, virtual libraries, lecture notes, and online discussion boards or social media platforms.

Learning Outcomes

By the completion of the Becoming a Dreamworker course, students will be able to

  • understand and explain major points of the history of dreams and dreamwork, the research in dreamwork past and present, the major theorists in the field of dreams - past and present, and able to describe and utilize numerous methods of working with dreams, for their own use and to share as a facilitator for others.
  • identify transpersonal concepts in the field of dreamwork and dream research, historically and currently.
  • experience “hands-on” personal dreamwork, employing a number of different methods to work with their own dreams and assist others with their dreams.
  • lead a dream group, present a dreamwork workshop, and/or take on the role of a dreamworker assisting others in working with their dreams and/or in becoming a dreamworker.

Organization of the Course

The course is organized into twelve weekly modules. Each module will cover some aspect of dream history, research or theory and some aspect of dreamwork, and will require reading from the required textbook(s) or other provided material, watching videos, listening to mp3's, participating in online discussions, and written assignments, including keeping a dream journal and a personal symbol dictionary.

Week 1: Entering the Realm of Dreams

Week 2: Early Thinking About Dreams

Week 3: Freud and Free Association

Week 4: Jung - Amplification, Archetypes, and Active Imagination

Week 5: Modern Dream Theories and Techniques

Week 6: Dreams and Creativity

Week 7: Applying the Techniques

Week 8: Working with Others

Week 9: Working in a Group Setting: Ullman Method, Taylor & Stinson's Work, and the Dream Helper Ceremony

Week 10: The Dimensions of Dreams: Somatic Contributions

Week 11: The DImensions of Dreams: Paranormal Dreams

Week 12: Lucid and Spiritual Dreams

In this class, there will be a 5 week Dream Group Teleconference: weeks 5-9 on Fridays from 7:30 - 9:00 pm EST. These group times will get you comfortable with working in a dream group. During these weeks the group will also try out different dream group methods. At first, your mentor will model and you will then be invited to sit in the role of the facilitator. Though you are very much encouraged to attend, the calls will be recorded and the links posted for those who cannot make these meeting times.


The Practicum will be completed during weeks 9-12. You should plan ahead to be sure you understand the requirements and are properly prepared to complete the Practicum. The Practicum must be completed by the end of the 12th week. Additionally, your own Analysis and Evaluation of your Practicum, as well as all feedback/evaluations from your participants must be returned to your mentor no later than 11:55 pm Sunday of the 12th week.

You have a choice of completing one of three different Practica, which will be evaluated by a combination of feedback from you and your participants. You will be required to complete a Student Report and each participant will be required to complete a Participant Evaluation.  

Practicum choices:

#1 – Workshop: Prepare and complete a 4 - 6-hour one-day workshop for a medium-sized group (6 – 12 people). 

#2 – Dream Group: Start a dream group of 4 – 6 individuals, planning to meet a minimum of 4 times for 1.5 - 2 hrs.

#3 – Individual Mentoring: Work on an individual basis with at least 3 people, a minimum of 3 sessions of at least one hour each. 

Program Expectations

Becoming a Dreamworker Certificate students are:

  • Held to the course deadlines for assignments;
  • Required to read the required material and to respond to the topic assigned (versus digressing from the assigned topic);
  • Required to complete practicums when assigned;
  • Expected to write clearly using proper grammar and punctuation.

Becoming a Dreamworker Certificate students are not:

  • Held to strict APA standards in formatting written assignments (but must cite sources properly);
  • Required to take proctored exams.

At the discretion of the faculty member and the specific course being taught, some assignments may be identified in the course as optional for noncredit Dream Interpretation Certificate students. Faculty members may also elect to modify assignment requirements for noncredit Dream Interpretation Certificate students, such as word count or page count.

All grades for noncredit students are either Successfully Completed (SC) or Not Successfully Completed (NC). This grading criterion is used for all assignments and the final course grade.

Jewels Maloney, Ed.D

My life has been quite eclectic, rich, and full. I have been a teacher of young children, a disarmament activist, a poet, a performer in multi-media theater and dance, and have lived in several intentional communities. I was a professor of education for thirteen years, working with teachers of all age groups to ignite, nurture, and expand their own and their students' creativity. I created two nature-based schools for children: one for 2-12-year-olds in Montana and one for infants to five-year-olds in California. For the past 12 years, I have been living in Sedona, AZ, and working as a healer, a conscious channel, and a guide to this incredible sacred site of our planet. I also guide Sacred Avalon Journeys in England.

At this point in my life, I am most attuned to pure gnosis: direct communion with the creative energy fields of omniscience, omnipresence, and divine love. My interests include pre and perinatal psychology, creativity and human development, creativity and education, creating new schools and communities for the children already here, and those coming to the planet. I have been and am deeply involved in the intensive transformation that is occurring on every level in humanity and our planet as we open to more and more of our multi-dimensional nature, understand that we are love in a human body and that we are eternal consciousness with infinite creativity. The beginning of this New Age, this New Earth, is a very creative time, ripe with myriad possibilities.

Humanity's understanding of the realms of the transpersonal is in the process of magnificent forward momentum. Great knowledge and direct understanding and experience of all the gifts of the transpersonal landscape and realities are unfolding more and more rapidly for us all. I am excited about the alchemy of working with the faculty and students at AU. What an exciting course of study to be pursuing!
