Sunday Afternoon Session:
Mental Health and Mindfulness
Marsha Engle, M.Ed., Sunday 2:00-5:00
There is an explosion of interest in the area of mindfulness across many disciplines and our institutions. What is mindfulness? How is the breath used? How can mindfulness be helpful to our wellbeing?
Mindfulness is a practice that allows us to reduce suffering and increase wellbeing by: 1) being less reactive to what is happening in the moment; 2) focusing our attention on the present moment, which is free of past and future entanglements and complications; 3) stepping out of our conditioning and seeing things differently, freshly; and 4) cultivating compassion and acceptance towards self and others.
Mindfulness practices free us from what Tara Brach, psychologist and meditation teacher, calls the "trance of unworthiness". This is the lens from which we often perceive and experience our world; the view that says "something is wrong is wrong with me". Participants will:
1. Gain an understanding of what mindfulness is and its many benefits.
2. Experience various mindfulness techniques to bring greater joy and ease in their lives.
3. Learn how the practice of mindfulness actually creates healthy changes in the brain.
Marsha Engle MSW, MEd. is a clinical social worker in private practice who has many years of experience utilizing mind-body-spirit approaches for maintaining physical and mental health.
